“Buy before you need a car” is the single most powerful tip. When you start the car-buying process at your leisure, you can confidently decide which vehicle you want, how much you should pay, and how you will finance its purchase. You can visit the dealership more relaxed, knowing you have time to consider your options. Desperation = overpaying.

Best Time of Year for Used Cars

Winter/Early January is #1 for Used Buyers
Used-car timing is front-loaded. January can still be attractive for used buyers, yet February and March get tighter fast as tax-refund demand lifts sales pace and pushes wholesale values higher. Spring usually favors sellers, not bargain hunters.

The Surprising Best Holiday
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the best single holiday for used car buyers, full stop. iSeeCars found 65.5% more good deals on MLK Day compared to an average day. Cold weather keeps foot traffic down, dealers want to start the year moving inventory, and the holiday falls right in the sweet spot of January's peak buying window.

Avoid Tax Season
Skip April. Refunds bring buyers, buyers create competition, and that competition works against you.

Best Time of Month

The last few days of the month are ideal for negotiating, as dealers prefer a slight loss over missing their goals. End-of-quarter months - March, June, September and December - often lead to even bigger savings.

Best Day of the Week

Weekday mornings are typically slower, especially midweek. Visiting a used car dealer on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning often means more one-on-one time with a salesperson and finance manager. You may also find the staff more relaxed and willing to answer detailed questions about vehicle history, warranty options, and financing terms.

Saturday afternoons are often the busiest time at most dealerships. Heavy foot traffic can mean less personalized attention and reduced flexibility in negotiations.

Holiday Weekends - Real vs. Hype

Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and Black Friday are heavily advertised as car buying events. Manufacturers do offer special incentives during these weekends, but the deals are not always as dramatic as the commercials suggest.

Labor Day is the best holiday for used cars specifically because it combines end-of-month pressure, end-of-quarter pressure, and model-year clearance, with manufacturers running actual promotional events.

Model-Year Clearance Window

The most impactful timing factor is model-year clearance. When the next model year vehicles start arriving (typically August through October), dealers need to move current year inventory. The savings can be $3,000 to $8,000 compared to buying the same vehicle six months earlier.

EV Deals Are Different Right Now

EV timing is at an extreme level. J.D. Power data shows that in December 2025, EV discounts averaged $11,414 per vehicle vs. $3,219 for non-EVs. Worth noting: the federal $7,500 Clean Vehicle Credit was repealed for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, so it is no longer available.
