Check out this video of the "mechanic-unfriendly" design of the 2021 Ford Explorer ST, courtesy of Rainman Ray’s Repairs. Problems they’re running into include:
Non-Replaceable Rear Bushing: A torn differential bushing was found, but according to Ford's service diagrams, the bushing itself is not replaceable. Instead, the entire subframe assembly must be replaced!
Over-Engineered Drive System: The vehicle's all-wheel-drive system is perhaps best described as a "conglomeration," featuring an intermediate axle shaft that runs directly through the engine oil pan.
Single-Use Components: To fix a differential oil leak, the front differential and intermediate shaft must be removed. Furthermore, the plastic oil pan is a "one-time use" part and must be replaced entirely once removed.
Insurance & Warranty Hurdles: Not Ford-related, but the aftermarket warranty company employed stalling tactics, requesting more photos of oil leaks despite initial evidence being provided.
This is part of a growing trend where many auto manufacturers put zero thought into future accessibility, leading to time-consuming and frustrating days for technicians - and expensive fixes for consumers.
We aren’t letting German cars off the hook
While many mechanics laud Hondas for their longevity, one notes that 80-120K miles should be considered high mileage on German cars.
