Honda has issued a recall for over 440,000 Odyssey minivans in the United States due to a software defect that can cause airbags to deploy unexpectedly.

Recall Overview

  • Affected Vehicles: 440,830 Honda Odyssey minivans.

  • The Issue: A programming error in the SRS control module contains incorrect deployment parameters. This causes the system to mistake normal road impacts-such as hitting a pothole, speed bump, or debris-for a side-impact collision.

  • The Risk: The side and side-curtain airbags may deploy without warning, potentially causing injury or loss of vehicle control.

Safety & History

  • Timeline: Honda has been aware of the issue for nearly a decade; the first incident was reported in November 2017.

  • Incident Reports: There have been 130 warranty claims and 25 reported injuries linked to this defect. No fatalities have been reported.

The Solution

  • The Fix: Honda dealers will perform a software update to the SRS control logic at no cost to owners.

  • Notification: Official recall communications and specific timing for owner notifications are expected to follow shortly.

As we all know, recalls are covered by the manufacturer, but our time isn’t.
