Ford is recalling approximately 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks in the U.S. due to a transmission defect that can cause the vehicle to downshift unexpectedly into first gear, regardless of speed.

Recall Details

  • Affected Models: 2015-2017 Ford F-150 pickups equipped with the 6R80 transmission.

  • The Issue: A loss of signal from the transmission range sensor - caused by wear, heat, and vibration - can trigger an unintended downshift. This can lead to a sudden loss of vehicle control or rear-wheel lockup.

  • Safety Impact: The NHTSA is aware of at least two injuries and one accident potentially linked to this issue.

The Remedy

  • Software Update: Dealers will update the powertrain control module (PCM) software at no cost to the owner.

  • Hardware Replacement: If the vehicle shows specific diagnostic codes related to this issue before the software is installed, dealers will replace the "lead frame" under an extended warranty program.

As we all know, recalls are covered by the manufacturer, but our time isn’t.
