I’ve heard quite a few nightmare stories from DIY folks using aftermarket car parts sourced from Amazon and other discount retailers. These are some of the risks you’re taking when you decide to save money on auto components:
Counterfeit and subpar quality: Amazon is known to have issues with knockoff parts that mimic brand-name products but are made to much lower standards. These parts can fail early and often.
Safety hazards: Inferior parts, particularly critical components like brakes, suspension, or sensors, can put you and your family’s lives at risk.
Poor fitment and compatibility: The "this fits your vehicle" tool on Amazon is often inaccurate. Parts may not fit correctly, leading to difficult installations or requiring modifications.
Lack of warranty: Unlike authorized dealers or reputable auto parts stores, many Amazon third-party sellers do not offer reliable warranties.
I can’t even imagine how the return process goes for parts that fail. Buying OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) or reputable, trusted aftermarket brands is the smart way to go about your DIY goals. Sherwood and his team at Royalty Auto Service have often cited Amazon parts issues and here’s one video example detailing a customer’s situation.
I tell my kids all the time, “stay consistent with your oil changes and vehicle maintenance”, or you’re going to face one hefty bill. Prime example here.
Thanks for reading everybody!
