Let’s take a look at one of Ford’s most popular models: the venerable Explorer. Here’s a sample CarInspection.com Score for a 2017 model for sale.

The 2017 Explorer sold more than 250K units, and owners have reported many faults requiring repairs:

  • Suspension Issues: A major recurring problem is the rear suspension toe links fracturing, leading to a "squirrely" or unstable feeling while driving. Sway bar links and control arms also frequently require replacement.

  • Engine/Cooling System: Water pump failure is a significant and costly repair, often occurring at higher mileage.

  • Transmission/Drivetrain: The Power Transfer Unit (PTU) is known to fail, often due to degraded fluid, resulting in expensive repairs.

  • Exhaust and Fumes: Leaking or cracked exhaust manifolds can cause exhaust fumes to enter the cabin.

  • Body/Interior: Reports of the hood appearing loose or fluttering at high speeds, along with issues involving the rear liftgate hydraulics.

There have also been 10 recalls up to this point, with some of the biggest ones focused on:

  • A-Pillar Trim Detachment (2025): Nearly 500,000 units from 2016-2017 are recalled because exterior trim clips may not hold, allowing the trim to fly off and cause a road hazard.

  • Seat Back Welds (2017): A safety compliance recall for ~2,500 vehicles (including 2017 Explorers) due to an improper weld on the driver's seat back, which may not properly restrain a driver in a crash.

  • Power Seat Track (2019): Some 2017 models have a sharp burr on the power seat track, posing a risk of injury to hands.

  • Steering Gear Heat Shield (2017): Corrosion on fasteners could allow the heat shield to detach, which may increase steering effort

While we aren’t highlighting these facts to dissuade you from considering this model year of Explorer, we suggest focusing on the Value Score to ensure you aren’t overpaying for a vehicle that’s likely to need future repairs. You’ll want to check out the CARFAX to understand what work was done by the current seller. And remember, any notes of a failed inspection should prompt some questioning to find out what specifically it failed for.

Ford fans out there should avert their eyes, because mechanics frequently cite this brand as having gone downhill lately.
