According to Edmunds, In Q2 2026, the average transaction price for a 3-year-old used vehicle reached a new second-quarter record of $32,461 (up 4% from the previous year and 15.5% from Q2 2021). Despite these high prices, vehicles are still selling quickly, averaging 38 days on dealer lots.

Affordable used cars have become scarce. Vehicles priced under $20,000 dropped from 55.2% of used sales in Q2 2019 down to 31.8% in Q2 2026. Meanwhile, vehicles priced over $50,000 nearly quadrupled their market share.

A budget of $10,000 to $15,000 buys significantly less car than it used to. In Q2 2019, that budget secured a 4.7-year-old vehicle with 58,000 miles; in Q2 2026, it buys an 8.7-year-old vehicle with over 98,000 miles.

Depreciation rates mean that the same $15,000–$20,000 budget stretches much further with certain brands. For example, shoppers can find a 3-year-old Kia with under 50,000 miles or a 7-year-old Toyota with over 85,000 miles for the exact same price.

Affordable cars sell in under a month. Get preapproved for financing beforehand so you can act immediately. Expanding your search beyond traditional reputation leaders (like Toyota or Honda) can help you secure a newer vehicle with fewer miles and potential remaining factory warranty coverage. However the potential reduction in liability is another reason to find out what the car inspection score is for that particular vehicle.

Older, luxury, or prestige brands might have higher insurance, maintenance, and repair costs than a newer alternative. Lots to consider as you begin your search.

Good luck, and thanks for reading everybody!
